・As the guns were silenced, Texas Snowy Egrets staged a startling comeback. During the 1920s and 1930s, both island and inland colonies prospered. Kincaid (in Oberholser 1974) noted that invading Cattle Egrets, which take insect foods that abound inland, had displaced huge numbers of snowies at inland nesting locations. However, snowies, which take many species of marine prey, have the upper hand at bay island colonies, from which Cattle Egrets have to fly miles to obtain sufficient grasshoppers or other insects to feed their chicks. During 1990 approximately 1,300 pairs of Snowy Egrets bred in UTC coastal colonies (TCWD data). At High Island’s Clay-bottom Pond, now protected by Houston Audubon Society, 109 pairs of snowies nested in 1999 where none had only a couple of years earlier.
