本日は a lot of や a number of の後ろに続く the について説明します。これは前回の the many と同様、意外に多い用法ですが、日本の辞書や文法書であまり触れていません。ベースとなる考え方は前回触れた many people と the many people と同じです。それでは具体例を見ていきましょう。
(1)「a lot of」 と「a lot of the」の違い:
・Apple makes a lot of people happy again. (Apple は再び多くの人々を楽しませている。)Apple makes a lot of people happy again | Network World
【研究】この「多くの人々」には限定がかからないので、the は不要です。
・I think a lot of the people that come to your site see your videos, see how successful you are at such a young age and probably hope to follow in your footsteps. (私は思うに、このサイトに来る多くの人々は、あなたのビデオを見て、その若さでどれほど成功を収めているかを目にし、あなたのようになりたいと考えていることでしょう。) http://erockappel.com/
【研究】1. 「サイトに来る多くの人々」なので、ここは限定の the が必要です。 2. a lot of the のように the の位置が of の後ろ来る点に注意しましょう。これは下記の a number of the も同様です。
(2) 「a number of」と「a number of the」の違い:

【研究】この a number of は the を伴わないので、後続する people は「総称的」であることが分かります。a number of the people であれば「対象となる人々の多くは」という意味になります。

the の位置が一見特殊に見えますが、それほど難しい用法ではありません。次回は基本動詞の用法に戻ります。
