doubt の用法_22_doubt that_5

本日は前回の用法の続きです。

doubt が that 節を従える場合と whether 節を従える場合では意味上、大きな違いが存在します。
a. I doubt whether...≒I don't know whether...
・I doubt whether he will come or not.(彼が来るか否か分からない。)
【研究】上記の例文は I don't know whether he will come or not. で書き換え可能です。

b. I doubt that...≒I believe that S' ...not V'...
・I doubt that he will come. (彼は間違いなく来ないと思う。)
【研究】上記の例文は I believe he will not come. で書き換え可能です。
