・One can understand the erasure of the experiences and conditions of agricultural labor in Byzantine Studies in part as a replication of the biases inherent in the Byzantine archive itself. Anthony Bryer, for instance, argues that “in the absence of a work ethic, Byzantines had an approach to manual labor. It was to avoid it.
