・There is a perfectly well-established method of working coal which entails planned collapses. The first lot of coal is worked out leaving huge pillars holding the roof up. Now, you can back-fill the hole with waste rock (“gobbing”) or you can knock away the pit props and engineer a controlled, stage by stage collapse.
