英文法解説によると、unless を仮定法で使用できないというのは、比較的最近になって指摘され始めたことのようです。また、OALD および LDCE では、unless の仮定法での使用を認めていません。下記は OALD からの引用です。
Unless is used to talk about a situation that could happen, or something that could be true, in the future. If you know that something has not happened or that sth is not true, use if ... not:
・If you weren't always in such a hurry (= but you are), your work would be much better.
・Your work would be much better unless you were always in such a hurry.
→unless を含むイタリック体は非文という意味です。
