意外に戸惑う数量表現の一つに a number of があります。ランダムハウス (英和) では、「多数の」意味だけ認めており、ジーニアスでは「多数の」か「若干の」になるのは文脈によると記述しています。またジーニアスには「米国には『多数の』の意味で用いるのが普通」とも書かれています。文脈に左右されるという点に異存ありませんが、「米国では〜」には、やや違和感を覚えます。下記に例を挙げましょう。
・a number of things: several of a particular type of thing e.g. I decided not to go, for a number of reasons.

上記 2 つの例文を見て分かると思いますが、「若干の」しかサポートしていません。実際の案件を見ていても意外に多いのが some の意味で使用される a number of です。
しかし「多数の」のみ語義として認めている辞書もあります。

実際の英語ではまず、「若干の」で解釈し不具合が生じるようであれば「多数の」の意味で捉える方が良いでしょう。日本で横行している「a number of はまず many で解釈」はそろそろ考えたいところですね。
